Smooth sailing is easily achieved!

What is a BCW?

BCWs are before class work sheets and contain 20 or 25 questions that are review questions from previous lessons. They are graded each week and returned to students on the first class day of the week. These papers must be signed by parents when grades are below 70%. All students have the chance to “redo” the problems they got incorrect and pass them back in within two class days for half credit bringing low grades up to a max score of 79%.

Can tests be taken again?

Tests with low scores may be retaken for a maximum score of 79%. These retakes must be scheduled a day in advance, within a week of the original test date and are given after school in the silent study that runs from 2:30 until 3:30 daily. A midterm and a final may not be retaken. My policy, with rare exception, is to return graded exams to the students the next class day after they are taken.

Is late homework accepted?

Late homework is NOT accepted for credit, although it should be completed for practice. The reason for this is that we spend the start of each class going over the previous night’s homework and it’s value to the student is lost if they do not have it for reference in front of them. The opportunity to ask for clarification is lost to them. Personal exceptions may arise if emergencies exist. Communication is key!

When is extra help offered?

Extra help is offered every Tuesday after school until 3:30 and by appointment during Tuesday and Thursday study halls. My requirement is that my students sign up one day in advance so I can plan for them and avoid overcrowded and ineffective sessions!

How are effort grades determined?

Effort grades are calculated using homework and class preparedness as a baseline. In addition, because the students may redo and retake BCWs and tests to improve low scores, I expect that they will do so. When a student does not choose to make use of this safety net, it negatively affects their effort grade in my class.
